Empowered Women International (EWI) presents the third annual “We the People Project” centered on the lives, art and cultures of Muslim and Arab women.  The one-day arts and cultural event combines a juried mixed-media exhibition by eight Muslim and Arab women living in the Washington DC Metro area, films presented by 20,000 Dialogues, book presentations and panel discussions with activist Muslim women, artists demonstrations on Islamic Ornamentation, Arabic Calligraphy, textile art decoration, bookmaking and painting, and a one-woman show performance “Unveiled” by Pakistani-born artist, Rohina Malik.

The exhibition, Speak Your Mind: The Art, Stories and Cultures of Arab and Muslim Women juried by Artist, Activist and Writer Tom Block, documents through paintings and photography the immigrant and refugee women’s experience, explores issues of integration and identity, and build dialogue, respect and multicultural understanding about Islam and our global community.  The exhibition runs from June 1-25 at the Galleries of Takoma Park Community Center.

This project has been made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Partners include Takoma Park Arts and Humanities Commission (TPAHC), Pyramid Atlantic and Takoma Park Recreation Department. The exhibition and events will take place at the Galleries of Takoma Park Community Center in Maryland. Exhibition Curator: Tom Block.
