Butterfly explores the final day of a self-appointed prophet, Todd (half-Black and half-Jewish), a once promising professional baseball player who answered a call to prophecy fifteen years before. The play takes place in the suburban Washington D.C. living room of the house he grew up in, with his single acolyte Jan (a Serbian refugee); a therapist; a medieval Muslim mystic (Ibn Sina) he has called back from the dead; the bubbly Martini, a beautician; his mother and his doppelganger, his invisible father who is interred in a mental asylum in Poughkeepsie, NY – all of whom help bring his quest for prophecy to resolution. Butterfly received its first reading at the Kennedy Center (Washington DC) in September 2012. This will be its world premier production.
