Absurdist-Mystical Plays Published

A collection of six of my absurdist-mystical plays has been anthologized. My absurdist-mystical plays distill more than three decades of my mystical reading, study and — to a lesser degree — practice into the timeless experience of the stage. This work ultimately inspired me to develop a manifesto for using mystical ideas in theatrical productions, published as Mysticism in the Theater: What’s Needed Right Now (Routledge, England, 2022). Here, I developed from my own writing, a model for infusing this unique energy into theatrical productions, and giving the audience a deeper experience.

Mystical theater does not offer the “button,” the answer, the riddle-solved, the satisfying “ah-ha” moment of normative, narrative theater. It opens doorways to questioning, and often leaves the audience bewildered, instead of satisfied in the manner to they are used accustomed.

And so these pieces, meandering, theatrical, questioning, humorous and absurd, open doorways, lead in circles, head in one direction only to change direction and then change again — and end with a raised eyebrow of bewilderment, a nod at the universal questions that underpin all: why? How? When? And perhaps most importantly: Who? For God’s sakes: who?
